It's like a swear word
causing pain and frustration
usually going unnoticed
Algebra
might as well be greek
frustration
explained over and over again
just not understanding
it's a plague
that affects people every day
so next time someone
has trouble understanding
they're not stupid or lazy
they just need some time
they just take a little longer
to understand
they're just as smart as you

I have ADHD (Attention deficit hyperative disorder) I am not on medication by my own choice which means that I have to deal with the symptoms on ADHD more stronly then a medicated person. It is my choice not to be on medication and I have to deal with that choice everyday.

I wrote this poem after a few of my classmates were teasing another of my classmates. He had ADD and they were calling him stupid and other really nasty names that I shall not repeat.

Or smarter in your case.
The thought that went behind this poem is really nice, a bit depressing but it was written really well.

I never knew you had ADHD. People are skanks sometimes.
Very interesting and the short sentences really give it a fast pace.

My son has ADD-I. It's hard on the parents, too, wanting the best for their children and wanting to help make things better. Some people develop coping mechanisms and function well without meds and some need it, at least for awhile. :hug:You have to decide what will help you most make the most out of your life. I'm sorry that people can be so stupid and uncaring. (and have to pick on others to make themselves feel bigger and less scared) All you can do is try to be there for others, and remember that the bullies are
really the loosers here in the long run.

Yes I have grown to understand that. The classmate of mine that this poem is mostly based on has ADD and has got to be the most caring person I've ever met, unfortuantly I was the only one who took the time to know that.

Thanks for the comment.

That's really too bad, but hurray for you! :boogie: Now you have something extra to take with you,-knowing him/her.

I have ADD too. It was diagnoised very late though, so the coping mechanisms I came up for it were failing me.

I'm on medication now because I'm considered too old to learn those techniques they teach kids with it. Stupid schools-- I was in my first year of high school when people finally noticed the problem and had me tested; I tried to find those programs, but they turned me away. Idiots, they need to do something for all the kids being diagnoised late.

Sadly I can't be taken off the meds because I develop withdrawal effects if I'm off too long; I can handle a day or 2 off though. I suppose that's some progress since I couldn't handle even that intially. Maybe one day I'll be taken off or given a 'weaker' medience.

Nice poem. The short sentences give it a fast pace, and that works well since that's what happens a lot of times when you have ADD/ADHD. The lack of periods, commas, etc. also help with that effect. :)

I'm sorry for your friend. I was never teased for having ADD-- I was teased for everything else. But I doubt the reason doesn't matter; it hurts all the same. It's their loss for not getting to know such a nice, caring person.

Consider yourself lucky to have been diagnoised at all then. Most girls don't get diagnoised until 8th grade! One of my friends wasn't diagnoised until she was 17, but she didn't have many syptoms for it anyways, only a slight impulsiveness (but she wasn't loud-impulsive).

Only reason girls don't get diagnoised early like boys is because they don't tend to disrupt the class by beng loud. But if you look closely enough, you'll see some symptoms like inconsistent grades in people with the inattentive type (this the one where the person is not loud). The kids learn to adapt and get by until middle school when "higher thinking" skills are needed. Their old coping methods simply fail at that point for these new types of school work.

My mom has a mild form of it too, but doctors are reculant to do anything because ADD is supposed to be a childhood problem. Yeah like the problem just goes away when you turn 18. She was a kid back when it was relatively new and was easily missed back then, so now she qualifies for the 'new' adult form. The problem is that few doctors recognise that form, so there's not much that can be done for her. Mom can't take the meds ether because they give her hypertension or something.

I really wish that doctors looked at treatment for these late cases. The ones diagnoised early tend to improve by adulthood with treatment, but the later ones are harder to treat in part because people don't want to admit that older people can have the problem or continue to have the problem.

Sorry for the rant. I'm in a talkitive mood today. ;) Hope to see more of your work soon. :)

I completely understand where you are coming from. I was not diagnosed until i went off to college, and ended up getting extremely depressed. You're right, people with ADD/ADHD are not stupid by any means. They are probably the sweetest, funloving people that many will ever be blessed to come across. I am now 20, but my life has turned around. I'm still on meds...primarily because I'm really trying to get through college and do well these last too years of college. Eventually I plan to get off, and just use natural vitamins and such for remedy. But anyways, keep doing what your doing, i'll add you to my list :-)

Yeah sometimes I think that it is a very unfortunate thing that it is a difficultthing for people to understnad. I'm glad that the medication has helped you and I widh you luck in college! My ADHD is also aggravated by my sensitivity to unatural colour. A diet without these things has worked very well for me and I have not needed to recieve medication as long as I watch what I eat and try to make my learning environments as ADHD friendly as possible. I am fortunate that most of my teachers are very supportive.

thanks so much for adding me to your list. I hope you enjoy some of my other works as well.
